Samoa backpackers will find an undiscovered paradise with plenty of cheap accommodation in idyllic settings. Samoa is primarily a beach destination with some beautiful sightseeing opportunities together with cultural interaction. The airport shuttle bus meets most international flights and costs ST$10 into Apia Town, the capital of Samoa. However, to go directly to the beach fales will mean taking an expensive taxi drive, a journey few people can afford. Instead, most backpackers spend their first night or two in Apia, the charming seaside town 40-minutes by road from the airport on the north shore of Upolu Island. Apia has several historical sights including the old homestead of author Robert Louis stevenson. There are lots of great restaurants and some of the best bars and nighclubs in the South Pacific. This is a great town to enjoy yourself.

There are really only two islands to visit in Samoa, Upolu and Savaii. Getting around is fairly difficult unless you hire a car or take the Green Turtle hop-on hop-off travel pass. However, there are plenty of traditional style beach fales around both islands so finding somewhere cheap to saty is never a problem. Upolu Island has some fantastic beaches along its south coast as well as a cuple of world class surfing breaks and a couple of resaonable dive sites. This coastline is backed by tropical rain forest and there are several attractive swimming waterfalls to visit.

Neighbouring Savaii Island can be reached by ferry in one hour or by scenic flight flight from the International Airport in 10-minutes. Most of the accommodation on Savaii is found around Manase Beach on the north coast but there are other more secluded beach locations around the island as well as some great surfing reefs off the south coast. Savaii is volcanic in nature with its last erruption being 100 years ago. This recent geological activity has made some fantstic sightseeing opportuniities including lava fields, lava tubes, black sand beaches, blowholes and sea arches. There are some interesting archaeological sites including one of the largest pre-European man made monuments in the South Pacific.

Few backpackewrs make it over to American Samoa, although those that do will find some fantastic coastal scenery and pristine rain forest. The main deterent is the price and lack of accommodation. American Samoa uses the US$ currency and prices are hugely inflated.
